Chapter 39 Verse 5
|
|
---|---|
Original text | He created the heavens and the Earth in true (proportions): He makes the night overlap the day, and the day overlap the night: He has subjected the Sun and the Moon, each one follows a course for a time appointed… |
Problem | This verse is often used to try to claim that the Quran states the Earth is a sphere, however the words used could just as easily apply to a geocentric universe where the day and night wrap because the Sun orbits the Earth; especially as the same verse also mentions the Sun running/moving for a fixed term. |
Solution | Make sure it is clear that the night and day alternate due to the turning of the Earth, and that it is both night and day at the same time in different places. |
New text | He created the heavens and the Earth in true (proportions): He turns the Earth so that night becomes day, and elsewhere so that day becomes night: He has also subjected the Moon, which follows a course for a time appointed |
