Chapter 3 Verse 7
Original text No one knows its true meanings except Allah and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge they say “We believe in it…”
Problem The meaning of this verse is disputed amongst scholars. Due to a lack of punctuation in oral recitation this verse is unclear as to whether only Allah knows the meaning of unclear verses, or Allah and believers.

  • No one knows its true meanings except Allah and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge. They say “We believe in it…” (Allah + followers know)
  • No one knows its true meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge they say “We believe in it…” (Only Allah knows)

Ironically the verse which is supposed to clarify who knows the meaning of unclear verses is itself unclear.

Solution Depending on the true meaning of the verse

  • Add the word also to indicate the followers understand as well as Allah.
  • Remove the word and to clearly indicate that only Allah knows.
New text
  • No one knows its true meanings except Allah and also those who are firmly grounded in knowledge they say “We believe in it…”
  • No one knows its true meanings except Allah. Those who are firmly grounded in knowledge they say “We believe in it…”
